Boston Public Garden is a chunk of a large park in the core region of Boston in Massachusetts. It is the first public botanical garden. The other part of the park is named Boston Common but often they are often clubbed together. But it is a mistake to club them since they happen to be separate entities with varying history and purpose.Boston Public Garden is the oldest botanical garden of the nation established in the year 1837. Originally a salty marshland, the twenty four acre garden has been designed by George V. Meacham. After 22 years, in 1859, the land was decreed to be preserved as an open space by Massachusetts General Court. Boston Public Garden along with Boston Commons forms the northern part of Emerald Necklace, a series of parks structured and designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.

Boston Public Garden presents botanical diversity in its colorful and rich plantings and flower beds. This flowering oasis ornaments the metropolis. It is home to finest formal plantings, tulips and native European tree species. The flower beds offer a riot of color from the moths of April to October. The rectangular shaped botanical garden is bordered by four important streets: Boylston Street (south), Arlington Street (west), Beacon Street (north) and Charles Street (east). The entrance to the Boston Public Garden is in the middle of the Charles Street. Boston Public Garden has seasonal flora that is properly taken care by the city authorities. It has a lake that is home to many swans. The presence of this lake has added on the tourist value of this spot because it has been recognized as the site of Swan Boats. Swan Boats is one of the major tourist attractions in Boston where you can avail a leisurely cruise in the warm months. It houses several statues and works of public art and the world’s smallest suspension bridge. Along with Swan Boats, Make Way for the Duckling Statues and a statue of George Washington on horse back are the prime highlights of this park. Boston Parks and Recreation Department in active co-operation with Friends of the Public Garden maintains the park.
